Partnering with Families since 2012FITNESS
Fitness is designed to provide an opportunity for students to engage in vigorous, physical activity; gain a basic knowledge of various sports; and develop a rudimentary understanding of body systems as they relate to fitness. Students of all fitness levels will be challenged and those who apply themselves will increase in strength, flexibility, and endurance. Students will survey popular sports like soccer, football, and baseball; play many different playground games; and develop their own new team sports.
ART
In this course, students will complete art projects based on the amazing art in award winning children’s books. We will explore basic art elements such as line, color, shape, texture, space and value. Children will learn how to use a variety of media such as colored pencil, paint, pastels, and collage. The emphasis in this class is for students to gain an appreciation for different styles and techniques of art while having fun learning to express themselves artistically.
LEGO STEM
This course will introduce students to the eight science and engineering practices, including asking questions and solving problems, modeling and prototyping, investigating, analyzing and interpreting data, computational thinking, creating evidence based arguments, and obtaining, evaluating and communicating information. First year students will work through guided builds while returning students will utilize their knowledge from the previous year to explore more advanced builds.Ballet
This class is for 6-12th grade girls who are new to ballet or have had some previous ballet. It covers basic positions, steps and combinations at the barre and center floor. The second semester will mainly center on learning a dance for the spring “Night to Remember”. One half credit in fitness or fine arts will be earned by students who are in 9th-12th grade.
Publications
The Publications class will produce MRA’s monthly school newsletter, and school yearbook. In this fast paced elective hour students will work together as a team to choose newsletter articles and submit ideas that they want to see released each month.* Students will submit work to choose their student editor who will work with the instructor learning the ins and outs of Canva while peer editing for high-quality journalism and design. Students will also have the opportunity to learn the processes of interviewing, editing, writing and rewriting, photography, as well as be introduced to writing prompts and thought provoking discussions, that we will use to model how we write and report.
Creative Writing
Students will learn to create written works that will demonstrate their inner story-teller. They will learn strategic creative devices such as the development of plot, characters, great beginnings and endings, narration, points of view, and dialogue. The students will read short stories from Great American Short Stories and participate in classroom conversation about the works. Students will participate in an “Author’s Corner” where they will have an opportunity to share their creative writing with other students and receive feedback. This course will grant the student one half credit in fine arts or electives for students in 9th-12th grade.
Violin, Viola, & Cello

There will be recitals given in December and May with dates and times to be scheduled. An optional solo and ensemble contest will be held in the spring. Our History
Our Dean of Education, Pastor Daniel Sweet, founded Matthew Road Academy in 2012. Intrigued by the university education style and seeking out God’s will for the surrounding community, he felt called to open a school that the average family could afford.
Pastor Sweet holds academics as a high priority, completing an array of degrees himself in first in mathematics and then theological studies. He can be found teaching various subjects each year at MRA. His goal for our school continues to be very simple:
- Affordability
- Parental Partnership
- High Academic Expectations
- Low Classroom Ratios
- Qualified Passionate Teachers
- Christ Centered Curriculum, Staff, Students, & Families

FAQS
The University-style education model at Matthew Road merges the private Christian academy experience with home-based, parent led education. Similar to a University or college experience, students attend on campus classes two to three times a week and complete additional learning assignments at home on the remaining days of the school week. At Matthew Road Academy, home learning is completed with parental support and direction.
High academic standards are set and while less time is spent in a classroom setting, students work toward achieving a strong individual work and study ethic in and out of class. A University style education provides a full multidisciplinary academic course load; however, it also uniquely allows flexibility for those wanting to enroll part-time.
MRA offers courses for 3rd to 12th graders.
MRA does not offer these classes. We feel that at this stage of development that a students needs more one on one time with a teacher, a block schedule does not best meet this need.
Matthew Road Baptist Church offers a wonderful program on Mon/Wed, which has a primary teacher for each grade and two electives. This allows the teacher to integrate reading lessons into many aspects of the learning through-out the day.
For more information on this program, please contact Cyndi King, the PAW program Director: 214-762-9437

Unfortunately, due to developmental milestones beyond academic readiness, MRA does not enroll students younger than 8 years old.
Absolutely!
MRA allows versatility with student schedules. Students may take classes one grade lower than their current grade, if needed, as well as above their current grade.*
*Students must be able to test into the classes they want to attend.
A student will attend a course(s) at MRA, where they will receive classroom instruction. The student’s teacher will also assign school work that is to be completed during the student’s off days. Their classroom instruction will have adequately prepared them for this school work, however as with any school work, parent assistance may sometimes be necessary. It is the responsibility of the parent to ensure that their child is completing the school work given during these off days.
This school work is then turned into the teacher the following class day. All school work is graded and posted in a secured online database for the parent’s oversight. Communication between the parents and teachers is highly encouraged, staff are required to reply to emails and return phone calls promptly.
While full-time students receive priority enrollment, it is not necessary for students to enroll full-time. If space is available then a student may take only one course if they so desire.
MRA is not a co-op and we do not require any parental volunteer hours. As with any school, they are a few opportunities each year to help during a special event, but this is always optional.
Once background checked, a parent is welcome to stay on campus during special events with office approval.
MRA only accepts mid-year enrollments on rare occasion. Our families contract for the full year and usually courses are full. In addition, core subjects are not easily dived into mid-year.
*Admissions has full discretion in accessing mid-year enrollments on a case by case scenario.
MRA offers quite a few other activities, to name a few:
Family Field Trips, Holiday Parties, Picture Day, Field Day, Leadership Training at DBU, End of the Year Program, Graduation Ceremony for Seniors, After-school Clubs and more…
MRA considers staff placement a top priority. All staff are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and live in a manner accordingly. We specifically hire teachers who have a love for students and a passion for teaching, not those just seeking an income. Our priority is a high standard of education, as well as to display the love of Jesus Christ to each and every student.
Philosophy of Education
Parents have primary responsibility over the education of their children; therefore, Matthew Road Academy pairs parental involvement and home instruction with college preparatory classroom instruction.
The primary goal of Matthew Road Academy is to educate and develop young people to be Christian leaders in the home, church, and community. As such, we seek to provide excellent and rigorous academics, Biblical instruction, and a distinctively Christian environment that prepares students to be critical thinkers and lifelong learners, who are fully equipped for future academic and professional endeavors.
