Creative Writing

Creative Writing – Matthew Road Academy
Instructor:

Courtney Johnson

Description:

This class will take a workshop approach to creative writing using published works as models for writing. The students will read short stories from Great American Short Stories and participate in classroom conversation about the works. Students will work together and provide feedback to one another in order to improve each other’s writing in a positive and collaborative environment. In the fall, each student will complete a minimum of four projects of his or her choice with the goal of publishing MRA’s first official literary journal. In the spring, students will work on a semester-long playwriting project for optional submission to the High School Playwriting Project contest. Instruction will include mini-lessons on writing tips and elements of fiction, but class time will generally consist of working on projects through the various stages of the writing process. Students will be allowed to use a laptop computer or iPad during class, but it is not required.

Requirements:

The class will meet once per week, and homework will be assigned each class period to be turned in the following class. The student is expected to come to class prepared with assignments and reading completed. The amount of time required from week to week will vary based on the ability of the student. However, expect 1-2 hours a week on average outside of class time.
