Publications – Matthew Road Academy

Each student will receive a yearbook.

Description:

The Publications class will produce MRA’s school newsletter, and school yearbook. 

Students will work with student editors and the instructor while learning the ins and outs of Canva while peer editing and learning journalism and design. Students will practice the processes of interviewing, editing, writing, and rewriting. In this fast paced elective period teamwork is a requirement as this environment thrives when students contribute ideas and opinions each class period while being challenged to rotate between the newsletter and yearbook work as needed.

Requirements:

The class will meet once a week and writing assignments will be ongoing. Writing will be done both in class and as homework (when needed), with student/teacher conferences being held on a regular basis. Class participation is a requirement of this course

Prerequisites:

The students must have passed the previous year of MRA English Composition with an 85% minimum/or submit written work for evaluation. In addition all students on the Publications team must have a letter of recommendation from their previous year English teacher.

Grades:

20% Newsletter 6 Newsletters (3 in Fall /3 in Spring)
–Turn in articles on time.
–Edits made as recommended.
20% Yearbook
–Log into our online yearbook each month.
–Complete at least 1 page/section for the yearbook.
20% Preparation
–Has journal and writing tools for each class.
–Stays on task.
–Participates in discussion.
20% Project
–Completion grade. 1 -3 Projects per semester (3-4 weeks for completion).
20% Journal
–Quietly does journal time.
–Organization
–Note taking

Middle School:
3 hours independently per day, 2 hours working with a parent per day

Bullet or Lined Journal of the student’s choosing.
Multi Color Pens
Multi Color Pencils
Highlighters
Computer with internet access & printer for at home use. (Cell Phones are not an acceptable alternative.)
