Description:

Websites are a necessity in today’s world whether it’s creating a website for blogging, opening an online shop, or having an online upcoming event webpage. Knowing how to get a website started, the ins and outs of how to create it and managing the upkeep cost companies and individuals thousands of dollars every year. This course will teach students every step of website building. Students will learn how to choose a hosting provider, purchase a domain name, the differences between “free” and paid websites as well as actually designing and adding content to each of their own personal websites as the year progresses. This course will include some basic HTML coding, dos and don’ts of website design, actual designing of websites with a WordPress-based platform.

Requirements:

Students will be online for this course and should have proper monitoring of online activity at home.

Prerequisites:

Basic computer skills needed. Students should know how to:
Locate the search bar
Type without assistance
Follow instructions

Grades:

Participation 50%
Preparedness 25%
Presenting in Class 25%
Upon successful completion, a high school student will earn 0.5 Elective credit toward graduation.

Level of Parental Involvement
M,W,F work

High School:
5 hours independently per day, 1 hour working with a parent per day

Shared Hosting & Domain will be purchased $50-$100 (cost will depend on options chosen by the student and their parents.)

Laptop with Wifi Access (Cell Phones & Tablets are not a suitable alternative.)

Mouse (Optional)

Additional purchases for websites will be up to individual families.

Other Requirements:

Website Hosting & Domain purchase must be made by an adult (person over the age of 18). Students will walk through what this process looks like in class and make the actual purchase with parents as homework on week 3. Instruction sheets will be sent home as well as a form for parents to fill out for students to be able to access their new hosting while in class.
